New Zealand white wine dominated the UK market over the festive period, reinforcing its reputation as a premium choice for consumers.

In the four weeks leading up to December 28, 2024, New Zealand white wine was the leading country of origin in the Still White Wine category, with value growth rising by 7.3 percent and volume increasing by 9.7 percent compared to the previous year.

Annual scan data compiled by Nielsen IQ shows that New Zealand wines maintained an average price of ยฃ8.09 per bottle, significantly surpassing the market average of ยฃ6.69. The countryโ€™s total market value grew by 9.2 percent, with volume up 9.8 percent year-on-year.

โ€œWe are delighted to see the continued strong performance of New Zealand white wine this past year, but particularly so over the busy Christmas period,โ€ says Chris Stroud, New Zealand Winegrowersโ€™ Market Manager UK Europe.

โ€œWe know consumers like to treat themselves and trade up over the festive season, so it is pleasing to see New Zealand as the white wine of choice.โ€

Sauvignon Blanc remains the key driver behind New Zealandโ€™s success, accounting for ยฃ1 of every ยฃ2 spent on Sauvignon Blanc in the UK. However, Stroud highlights that other varieties, such as Pinot Gris, are gaining traction.

โ€œWe are also seeing increased listings and performance with other white New Zealand varieties, such as Pinot Gris, which offers an opportunity for retailers to further premiumise the category.โ€

Chris Stroud.

New Zealand red wines also performed strongly, with an average bottle price exceeding ยฃ10.50. This reflects growing consumer trust in โ€˜brand New Zealandโ€™ and their willingness to pay a premium for its wines.

New Zealand Winegrowers is kicking off the year with its Annual Trade Tastings in Dublin, London, and Edinburgh at the end of January, in collaboration with Wine Australia.

Following this, attention will turn to Pinot Noir New Zealand 2025, a three-day event set to take place in Christchurch from February 11โ€“13. Returning after an eight-year hiatus, the event will bring together winemakers, industry professionals, and global wine enthusiasts to explore New Zealandโ€™s Pinot Noir heritage and future.

New Zealand wine exports reached $2.1 billion for the year ending June 2024, with the UK accounting for $440 million, or 21 percent of total exports. The countryโ€™s wines are now exported to more than 100 markets worldwide, cementing its position as New Zealandโ€™s sixth-largest export sector.
