Maersk Line has been named Sustainable Shipping Operator of the Year for the second time in three years for its investments in sustainable growth, carbon dioxide reducation and its advancement of industry transparency.

The Sustainable Shipping Awards was held in London recently. Jonathan Porritt, founder director of Forum for the Future and chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission, described Maerskโ€™s win as โ€œrichly deservedโ€.

Porrit said the industry now looked to Maersk Line for clear and consistent leadership in developing sustainable shipping.

Soren Stig Nielsen, Maersk Line Head of Sustainability, said the environmental impact of global shipping was a fundamental issue for the industry.

โ€œAs commercial trade continues to grow, we must challenge the way we think about shipping today,โ€ said Nielsen.

โ€œWe have a unique opportunity to shape our own destiny by becoming part of the solution in a low carbon economy. As an industry, we need to develop a shared vision to help our industry transform and support sustainable development.โ€

Since 2007, Maersk Line has cut CO2 emissions by more than 14% per container. The company is developing numerous further initiatives, including the commissioning of the new Triple-E class vessels, which have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 50% per container moved, compared to the industry average.
