The NZ Association for Migration and Investment (NZAMI) Awards recognise the major contribution of migrants and professionals involved in the immigration industry. Winners were announced on Friday August 14 at a black tie event in Auckland. The coveted Business/Investor Award was presented to Hongyan Zhu of Palmerston North (originally from China).

Hongyan was awarded the Business/Investor Award for developing a business that makes a significant contribution to the growth of New Zealand. After several visits to New Zealand, Hongyan identified a business development opportunity in a derelict service station in Palmerston North.  Hongyan has revamped the station to become a full-service Challenge Service Station under her business Qianhong International Trade. She has expanded her business to take orders for New Zealand produce (mainly honey) to be exported overseas, after recognising that fellow migrants wanted to send Kiwi products to family and friends in their home countries. Hongyan has revitalised a dying enterprise, is providing employment for two people plus herself and is exporting local produce around the world.

Hongyan’s business was established under the Long Term Business migration category. She holds an undergraduate degree in engineering and jointly owns, with her husband, an engineering company in China.
