Tauranga boutique distillery Simply Pure has won gold at the 2023 International Spirits Challenge with its Black Robin Rare Gin.

In a surprising turn of events, this premium gin, initially awarded bronze, gained a gleaming gold, leaving the team at Simply Pure ecstatic.

“We were content with a bronze. Though, learning it was in fact gold was a marvellous surprise,” says Irmengard Deinlein, co-owner of Tauranga-based Simply Pure, recalling the twist that occurred due to a technical glitch in the ISC’s judging system.

“This ISC Gold is not just a win for us, it gives customers another great reason to try Black Robin Rare Gin, boosting our conservation efforts,” says Irmengard.

Named after the critically endangered Black Robin, the gin reflects Simply Pure’s dedication to sustainability and conservation. “Our conservation efforts are at the heart of everything we do, and this award is a testament to that passion,” adds Irmengard.

The Black Robin, native to the Chatham Islands, is an icon of conservation success, rebounding from just one breeding pair forty years ago to a thriving population today. This remarkable recovery story mirrors the ethos of Simply Pure – that continuous effort can foster extraordinary results.

Their tagline, ‘pure spirits for a purer world,’ is for good reason. This ethos drives their conservation pledge, where $1 from each bottle sold through retail partners, and $5 from each online purchase from their website, are donated to charities protecting New Zealand’s flora, fauna, and wildlife.

These contributions have raised over $50,000 so far, making a significant impact in protecting Aotearoa New Zealand’s precious biodiversity.

Gin enthusiasts, high-end bars, restaurants, and hotels keen on a guilt-free indulgence will find Black Robin Rare Gin a rewarding addition to their shelves. With a zingy palate of lemongrass and lime zest, the gin gently carries herbaceous and grassy botanicals through the mouth, leaving lingering liquorice and star anise flavours.

Black Robin Rare Gin offers more than just a delightful drinking experience; it serves as a conversation starter around sustainability and thoughtful, ethical consumption.
