Martyn Dunne, Director General of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), has outlined new initiatives to streamline non-risk imports and exports, in a speech to the customs brokers and freight forwarding industry.
Dunne told the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Federation of New Zealand (CBAFF) annual conference that MPI has given the green light for the Multi Use Number and Original Documents initiatives.
The changes will now enable customs brokers and importers to process applications for bio security clearance certification for an agreed range of non-risk items more swiftly. It will also allow them to declare possession of an original copy of a document rather than having to send the original copy to MPI.
Newly-elected CBAFF president Trevor Duxfield hailed the decision as a major boost for the sector and one which will significantly reduce shipment delays.
“We have been working on this with MPI since October and are delighted Mr Dunne has announced this today,” said Duxfield. “This will speed up shipping transactions and ease the pressure on the border.
“The end result will be that imports will move more swiftly. Importantly, the resources saved can be focused on managing risk products.”
